What does human research say about saffron and AMD?
This is where the subject becomes particularly interesting.
Researchers have conducted several human studies examining saffron supplementation in people with AMD.
One randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 60 patients investigated 30 mg of saffron daily for six months. The researchers reported improvements in some retinal-function measurements, although results differed between dry and wet AMD groups and some benefits were not sustained at later measurements.
Another study involving people with early AMD found that 20 mg of saffron daily improved retinal flicker sensitivity over a three-month period.
Follow-up research also investigated longer-term saffron supplementation in early AMD. An earlier longitudinal study reported sustained retinal-function benefits during approximately 14 months of treatment, although the study design was not the same as a large randomized clinical trial.
More recently, a 2024 open-label extension study followed 93 adults with mild to moderate AMD taking 20 mg of saffron daily for 12 months. The study found a modest improvement in multifocal electroretinogram responses, while mean best-corrected visual acuity was slightly worse over the year. No saffron-related serious adverse events were detected. The researchers concluded that longer-term studies are still needed.
This creates a balanced picture.
The evidence is encouraging.
It is not definitive.
Does crocin actually slow macular degeneration?
This is one of the most important questions to answer honestly.
At present, it would be too strong to say that crocin has been proven to stop or reverse macular degeneration.
A better scientific statement is that saffron and its carotenoid compounds, including crocin and crocetin, are being investigated for their potential to support retinal function and possibly influence mechanisms involved in AMD.
A 2024 review of saffron and AMD research described promising findings involving visual function, retinal function and potential antioxidant, neuroprotective and anti-angiogenic mechanisms, but also emphasized the need for additional research to confirm long-term efficacy and safety.

Crocin versus saffron: are they the same thing?
